Nothing softer than water

installation of 16 porcelain ceramic modules relating to each other as a whole continuous form that works as one three dimensional sculptured piece.

It explores the tactile qualities that can be captured in ceramic form. It refers to the subtle feelings that the element of water can arouse by its touch of movement and fluidity. In the work I have explored the interplay of light and shadows of the form which in turn opens up the dimension of ‘space in between’ and through minimal composition places the piece in the context of the environment as an on-going research and visual commentary to the global warming and climate changes

'...there is nothing softer on this Planet than Water and water surrounds your heart.' Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching

The project is based on on-going research through film and photography of the reflections on water. Over the years I have been taking photographs movies in different countries. The element of water has been integral to all the places I have lived, worked and studied and also has been a continuous inspiration in my art practice of glass, ceramics and photography. It identifies with my passion for movement, light and the ‘space in between’.  From the outset, my research directed my exploration into an area of very clear, abstract images of reflections that could be viewed as computer graphics or animations. These images drove the direction of my analysis and explorations, further emphasising the role of the experience of the form itself. I was looking at the connections, dialogue and common qualities between images and the material based medium of ceramics. Concentrating on the images and their sequence, I have explored the way a still shot can be transformed into a 3D form. Under the moving sequence of my pictures, there is a flow of movement that water has as an element itself, being contemplative and subtle but at the same time clear and dynamic. These qualities have been focused upon in order to develop ‘nothing softer than water’
